Thanks to life, by Violeta Parra

Thanks to life that has given me so much
Gave me two stars and when I open them
Perfectly distinguishing between black and white
And in the high sky, the starry background
And in the crowd, the man I love.

Thanks to life that has given me so much
Gave me hearing, which in all its breadth
It records night and day, crickets and canaries,
Hammers, turbines, barks, showers
And the tender voice of my beloved.

Thanks to life that has given me so much
Gave me the sound and the alphabet
And with it the words I think and declare
Mother, friend, brother and shining light
The route of the soul of the one I love.

Thanks to life that has given me so much
Gave me the gait of my weary feet
With them I walked through cities and puddles
Beaches and deserts, mountains and plains
And for your house, your street and your backyard.

Thanks to life that has given me so much
Gave me the heart that shakes the frame
When I look at the fruit of the human brain
When I look at the good so far from the bad
When I look deep into your clear eyes.

Thanks to life that has given me so much
That gave me smiles and tears
This is how I differentiate happiness from sadness
The two materials that form my song
And your song, which is the same song
And everyone's song, which is my own song.
